Sundin: The Perfect Captain For The Mediocre leaf

If you live in Laffland, the question never goes away. Is Mats Sundin the leader he should be and does he deserve to be captain?

The big idiot recently demonstrated again that he’s a few forks and spoons short of a full set of cutlery. You know the incident. When his stick snapped in half and he flung the shaft up into the crowd. Now, does that rank right up there with the Dumb and Dumber and Dumbest things you’ve ever seen a professional athlete do, or what? He might have seriously hurt somebody. The league did hand him a one game suspension. He’s damn lucky he didn’t get sued. Can you imagine what a leaf hater like me would do if the big Sardine hit me with his shaft?

Have a glance at the chart below and conclude for yourself if Sundin ranks up there in the same category as the captains of the Stanley Cup winning teams of the past 36 years. I chose 36 because that’s how long the Cup drought has lasted in Toronto. There were only six teams in the NHL back then, you know. Stupid leaf.

The first thing that stands out is how many fewer playoff games Sundin has played in his career. This is his 14th NHL season and he’s only played in 74 games. Oops, I almost forgot, he does play for the Stupid leaf. That’s a valid excuse. Take a look at the winners in comparison. Yzerman - 181 playoff games played, Messier - 236, Scott Stevens – 233! Messier hasn’t even played a playoff game since 1997, yet he still has more than three times as many playoff games under his belt as Sundin.

I’m not going to start comparing the Big Sardine with the likes of Messier, Yzerman, Gretzky and Lemieux. That would be like comparing Paris Hilton to the toothless, bearded hag I saw the other day wearing a leaf jersey. Repulsive, you ask? It just doesn’t get any worse than that.

Let’s just compare Sundin to Joe Sakic. Damn, even that is not even close to being fair, but anyways…

They both began the careers as draft choices of the Quebec Nordiques. Sakic was the lucky one. He stayed with the franchise.

Sakic: Two Stanley Cups, one Conn Smythe (1996), First NHL All-Star team twice in 2001 and 2002, one Lady Byng, one Hart Trophy AND the Lester B. Pearson Award in the same year, 2001. When you get the Hart and the Pearson in the same year, EVERYBODY agrees you are the league’s MVP. Sakic also led the league in 2000-01 with 12 game winning goals. Joe leads the Avalanche in all-time goals, assists, points, everything.

Sundin: Second All-Star team in 2002. That’s it. No trophies, no awards, no Cups, nothing. Cry on leaf fans.

You know, I’m always fascinated by the level of ignorance exhibited by leafers who exclaim they were born leaf fans. YOU WERE BRAINWASHED, MORON!
