The Net Is Always Bigger At The leaf End

Get this; for 60 opportunities in a row, the stupid leaf has been shutout in nets.

Is that hard to believe or what? 1965 was the last time a leaf goaltender won the Vezina Trophy when it was shared by Johnny Bower and Terry Sawchuk No leaf goaltender has been the best in the NHL for any one season since 1964-65. Now that is remarkably abominable.

Up until 1981-82, the Vezina was awarded to the goalie(s) allowing the fewest goals against. Since that year, the William M. Jennings trophy has been awarded for the same statistic. No leaf has ever won the Jennings. It seems that taking care of business in your own end on the ice has not been a leaf priority – since 19 freakin’ 65!

The Vezina Trophy, since 1982, has been reserved for the best goaltender in the NHL as voted by the league’s 30 general managers. In some years, the winners of the Jennings and the Vezina have been the same goaltender, as Martin Brodeur was last year. But no leaf has won the Vezina Trophy since 1982 either.

So how did I arrive at the number 60? Easy; No Vezinas for 38 consecutive years and no W.M. Jennings Trophies for 22 consecutive years - 38 + 22 = 60 straight shots at a goaltender award the stupid leaf has squandered. Do they care? You decide. Here, take a look at how far away from being the best in nets the stupid leaf has been since 1967.

Warning: The following chart indicating how unfathomably putrid the leaf goaltending has been for most of the past 36 years may be disturbing to some younger leaf fans. Parental guidance is recommended.

Numbers highlighted in blue indicate the worst in the NHL.

Holy Mackinaw, eh leaf fans? 2,925 more leaf goals allowed than the NHL’s best. What a stinking, pathetic joke this leaf really is, I say!

I invite you to look up for yourself in how many seasons that a team has captured the Vezina/Jennings and gone on to win the Stanley Cup, or at least gotten to the finals. (Hint: It’s important to have great goaltending to win the Stanley Cup) Then, when you send in your $25 enrollment fee to the newly created “Official” leaf fan club, attach a little note asking: “Hey man, what gives in nets?”

By the way, at the time of writing (December 6, 2003), leaf goaltender Eddie Belfour was not in the top 30 in the NHL in either Goals Against Average or Save Percentage. Stupid leaf, they just can’t seem to figure it out. Hey have you decided yet – do they care?
